Isaac - Design Driven Innovation

Isaac shared ideas that he secured while browsing through a book " Design Driven Innovation" during our Weekly Monday Meetings. It was in relation to understanding customer' s needs when seeking to connect with them. The question was whether or not tools, like the AOC, Summary, Financial Analysis etc., were important or relevant at all to a particular customer. He suggested that we should revamp the rules of engagement by asking questions like " What does Financial Planning mean to you?" and from that answer design the tools that will meet this particular's client's needs. Thank you Isaac for sharing.

Picking off from there, let's start by asking ourselves ..." What does Customer Service mean to us?"

Business Development Activity

It was an exciting and activity packed day for us at the SP ACE District on 9^th June 2010; where we had our first telethon session at the AIA Call Centre.

Similarly, our new recruits had their first taste of pounding the pavement and conducting cold call surveys on the same evening.

The session was organized by De Beers Wong, Agency Manager, and co-ordinated by Jinn, our HR, Megan Kong, Financial Services Consultant, also took part in that evening’s survey. The main objective was to build up team spirit amongst our new members and give them a first hand experience at handling and managing face-to-face opportunities or objections along the course of the activity.

Introducing our new members who were present; Daniel, Nazri, Rajib, Haryani, Yvonne, and Zainab.

Fervour, great attitudes and a positive and open mind set seemed to be their order for the day, and they all arrived half an hour ahead of the scheduled time.

Results were encouraging and credit goes to their enthusiasm and fantastic efforts, I am pleased to present to you that a total of 20 leads were collected and we will be following-up with them closely.

On the 9th June 2010, the Ｄistrict had a fun and productive time during this telethon activity which was organised by Agency Manager, DeBeers Wong, as part of Ace's Community's support in business development for the people in Sp.Ace. 'Rainbow' roses are all the rage

Present your wife or girlfriend with a bunch of these flowers on Valentine's Day and she may well sue you for giving her an eye injury.

The highly colourful flowers have been developed by a Dutch businessman who dyes each bloom in the colours of the rainbow.

The dyes are produced from natural plant extracts and are absorbed by the flowers as they grow.

Aspecial process then controls how much colour reaches each petal – with spectacular results.

The 'Happy Flowers' were designed by Peter Van de Werken, who owns a flower company close to Den Bosch in southern Holland.

The firm sells only multi-coloured roses and chrysanthemums but is also looking to do pot plants.

Mr Van de Werken, 36, said: 'We used to only sell single colour flowers but the market for them took a dip.

'Myself and my colleagues started looking for something a bit different and came up with the idea of having different-coloured flowers.

'First of all we tried spraying the flowers but that did not work. Then we tried the dye. It took us about six months to get it right and we still make mistakes.'

The flowers, which make a change from the traditional Valentine's gift of red roses, can be ordered by visiting www.valueflora.com.

Guatemala: First, volcanic eruption

Above, this photo just posted to the Guatemalan Government's Flickr feed shows a massive, spontaneous sinkhole ("hundimiento") that appeared today in Zone 2 of Guatemala City, after overwhelming saturation of rains from tropical storm Agatha. Not Photoshop, sadly: these happen from time to time during major storms in part because of unstable geology (and bad urban engineering—read more about it in the comments). There are rumors of similar sinkholes now forming nearby. See it on Google Maps.

Japan - With Wireless Energy From Space

Japan's Wireless, Power-Generating, Solar Satellite Inhabitat

Japan has serious plans to send a solar-panel-equipped satellite into space that could wirelessly beam a gigawatt-strong stream of power down to earth and power nearly 300,000 homes.

The satellite will have a surface area of four square kilometers, and transmit power via microwave to a base station on Earth. Putting solar panels in space bypasses many of the difficulties of installing them on Earth: in orbit, there are no cloudy days, very few zoning laws, and the cold ambient temperature is ideal.

A small test model is scheduled for launch in 2015. To iron out all the kinks and get a fully functional system set up is estimated to take three decades. A major kink, presumably, is coping with the possible dangers when a 1-gigawatt microwave beam aimed at a small spot on Earth misses its target.

The $21 billion project just received major backing from Mitsubishi and designer IHI (in addition to research teams from 14 other countries).
